I have been playing soccer since age 5 and over the years have played at various levels, from street and pick-up games to competitive leagues. Along the way, I learned tactics and skills from coaches whose preferred teaching method seemed to be… a lot of yelling!
That all changed when I got an iPad. I now use an app to learn new skills and refresh tricks I learned a long time ago. The app is called StreetSkills (available in the Apple AppStore in free and paid versions) and provides demos for about 60 soccer skills/tricks. For each skill, the app provides an Overview video, slow view and detail view videos, as well as step-by-step instructions. I don’t mind the corny user interface, because the app’s content makes up for it. It’s useful and relevant, that’s all I care about.
I’ll take my iPad to the soccer field, prop it up on a bench and voila – I learn stuff, without any yelling. Now that’s mobile learning in action!
You are right, learning happens in the weirdest places. I have a flash card game (for learning French) on my phone that I use every morning on the bus!
Hahahaha, there’s something to be said for the old kind of learning too!! 😀
